Shoestring

Set in an unnamed city in the West of England and filmed in Bristol, Shoestring follows Eddie Shoestring, a rumpled former computer expert rebuilding his life after a breakdown, who becomes a private detective and the “Private Ear” of local station Radio West. Listeners phone in their problems, from missing persons to blackmail and miscarriages of justice, and Eddie investigates them free of charge, broadcasting what he finds. The result is a quirky, down-at-heel detective drama very different from the usual car-chase fare.
