Murder in Provence
About This Show
Murder in Provence brings a distinctly French flavour to British detective television, transporting viewers to the sun-drenched hills and picturesque streets of Aix-en-Provence where murder disrupts the leisurely rhythms of southern French life. This BritBox and ITV co-production premiered in March 2022, adapting Canadian author ML Longworth’s beloved series of novels into three feature-length episodes that showcase the delightful chemistry between Roger Allam and Nancy Carroll as an established couple who solve crimes whilst navigating the complexities of their on-again, off-again relationship. Based on Longworth’s intimate knowledge of Provence—where she has lived for over twenty-five years—the series captures both the region’s stunning beauty and the darker secrets that lurk beneath its idyllic surface.
Roger Allam, best known to mystery fans as Detective Fred Thursday in Endeavour, stars as Antoine Verlaque, an Investigating Judge in the French judicial system—a role that combines elements of detective work with judicial authority in a uniquely continental approach to criminal investigation. Verlaque is sophisticated, cultured, and possessed of refined tastes in food and wine, yet he remains approachable and grounded despite his elevated position. His investigative style relies on careful observation, logical deduction, and an understanding of human nature shaped by years of experience navigating French bureaucracy and provincial politics. Allam brings warmth and intelligence to the role, creating a character who is both believably French in his mannerisms and attitudes whilst remaining accessible to British audiences.
Nancy Carroll portrays Marine Bonnet, Verlaque’s romantic partner and a law professor who increasingly finds herself drawn into Antoine’s investigations. Marine possesses a sharp intellect and quick wit that perfectly complement Antoine’s more methodical approach. Their relationship provides the emotional backbone of the series—they are an established couple with genuine affection and understanding, though their different temperaments and occasional conflicts add romantic tension without resorting to tired will-they-won’t-they tropes. Carroll, known to British audiences from her role in Father Brown, demonstrates excellent chemistry with Allam, their banter feeling natural and lived-in rather than forced. When Marine begins working as a police consultant, it formalises her role in investigations and creates new opportunities for the couple to work together solving the mysteries that disturb their beloved Provence.
The series is supported by Keala Settle as Hélène, a detective who serves as Antoine’s trusted confidante and investigative partner. The dynamic between the three principal characters drives much of the drama, as they navigate professional relationships, personal loyalties, and the complications that arise when romantic and investigative partnerships intersect. Patricia Hodge appears in supporting roles, adding theatrical gravitas to the proceedings with her customary elegance.
Adapted for television by Shelagh Stephenson, the acclaimed playwright and screenwriter known for her work on Downton Abbey, the series maintains fidelity to Longworth’s novels whilst making necessary adjustments for the visual medium. The three feature-length episodes allow for more leisurely pacing than traditional hour-long formats, giving stories room to breathe and characters space to develop. Each episode presents a distinct mystery: a murder at the local university that exposes professional jealousies and academic rivalries; the death of an aristocrat at his crumbling château that reveals long-buried family secrets; and intertwined deaths in Éguilles and a nearby vineyard that suggest a love affair with fatal consequences.
The Provençal setting functions as more than mere scenic backdrop—it becomes an integral character in the series. The production makes full use of Aix-en-Provence’s architectural beauty, from its elegant fountains and tree-lined boulevards to its colourful markets and ancient stone buildings. The surrounding countryside, with its vineyards, lavender fields, and medieval villages, provides a stunning contrast to the dark deeds being investigated. The series captures the region’s particular quality of light, its relaxed pace of life, and its gastronomic culture, with food and wine playing significant roles in both the atmosphere and occasionally the plots themselves.
The tone of Murder in Provence differs markedly from darker British crime dramas. Whilst the murders are treated seriously and the mysteries require genuine detective work to unravel, the series maintains a lightness of touch that prevents it from becoming grim or oppressive. There is humour in the interactions between characters, pleasure in the depiction of Provençal life, and a sense that even murder cannot entirely dispel the region’s essential charm. This approach places it in the tradition of lighter European detective series that balance mystery with lifestyle appeal, offering viewers both intellectual engagement and visual escapism.
The series generated considerable enthusiasm from viewers who appreciated its beautiful locations, intelligent mysteries, and the appealing central partnership between Allam and Carroll. Many fans have called for additional series, praising the chemistry between the leads and the quality of the adaptations. Roger Allam himself has expressed enthusiasm for returning to Provence, noting that the first series received positive exposure and should encourage commissioning of further episodes. With eight Verlaque and Bonnet novels published and Longworth continuing to write, ample source material exists for future series should BritBox and ITV choose to continue the adaptation.
Murder in Provence occupies a distinctive niche in British crime television—quintessentially British in production and sensibility, yet thoroughly French in setting and atmosphere. It offers viewers the pleasure of armchair travel to one of Europe’s most desirable regions whilst delivering satisfying mysteries and exploring a mature romantic relationship between two intelligent, complex characters who genuinely enjoy each other’s company even as they occasionally drive each other to distraction.
