Foyle’s War

When war breaks out in 1939, Detective Chief Superintendent Christopher Foyle repeatedly requests a transfer to active military service, desperate to contribute more directly to the war effort. Each time he’s turned down, and the widowed detective must grudgingly accept that his duty lies on the home front. What he discovers is that his skills are more vital than ever—criminals of every stripe are exploiting the chaos, confusion, and panic created by the war to commit murder, engage in black market profiteering, and take advantage of Britain’s darkest hour for personal gain.

Set primarily in Hastings on England’s south coast from 1940 onwards, the series follows Foyle as he investigates crimes that reveal the moral complexities of wartime Britain. Far from the simple narrative of good versus evil, Foyle encounters British fascist sympathizers, corrupt officials, spies from both sides, conscientious objectors facing persecution, and ordinary citizens pushed to extraordinary—and sometimes criminal—acts by the pressures of war. The series is renowned for its meticulous historical accuracy, incorporating real events of World War II into its mysteries and honouring the veterans through careful attention to period detail.

Foyle is assisted by Samantha “Sam” Stewart, an enthusiastic MTC (Mechanised Transport Corps) driver seconded to the police force to compensate for wartime staff shortages. Despite Foyle’s initial instructions that she not involve herself in police work, Sam’s intelligence, curiosity, and knack for overhearing important conversations make her an invaluable asset. His other key ally is Detective Sergeant Paul Milner, a former soldier who lost his leg during the Battle of Norway and returned to police work while struggling with both his physical disability and the psychological trauma of combat.

After the war ends, the series continues into Series 7 and 8, with a retired Foyle reluctantly recruited by MI5 to navigate the dangerous world of Cold War espionage, trading the familiar streets of Hastings for the shadowy corridors of British intelligence in post-war London.

Created by Anthony Horowitz (Midsomer Murders), Foyle’s War combines compelling murder mysteries with rich historical drama, exploring how war transforms society and tests the moral character of ordinary people.
