Set in Washington, D.C., Bones follows Dr Temperance “Bones” Brennan, a brilliant but socially awkward forensic anthropologist at the Jeffersonian Institution, and Seeley Booth, a pragmatic FBI Special Agent who brings her the most badly decomposed, burned or destroyed remains. Their contrasting styles, her cold rationality against his instinct and people skills, make them an unlikely crime-solving partnership. Alongside Brennan’s team of eccentric scientists, they find the truth hidden in the bones.
Bones is an American crime drama created by Hart Hanson for Fox. It premiered on 13 September 2005 and ran for twelve seasons and 246 episodes until 28 March 2017, making it the longest-running one-hour drama produced by 20th Century Fox Television. Emily Deschanel stars as Dr Temperance Brennan and David Boreanaz as FBI Special Agent Seeley Booth. The series is very loosely based on the life and novels of real forensic anthropologist Kathy Reichs, who also served as a producer. Brennan is named after the heroine of Reichs’s crime novels. In a neat piece of mirroring, Brennan herself writes bestselling mystery novels starring a fictional forensic anthropologist called Kathy Reichs.
Each episode centres on an FBI case file. Booth brings human remains that standard identification methods can’t handle to Brennan and her colleagues at the Jeffersonian’s Medico-Legal Lab. Brennan reads clues in the bones themselves, from injuries and disease to the details of a victim’s life and death, while Booth handles suspects, interviews and the human side of the case. The core team includes artist Angela Montenegro (Michaela Conlin), entomologist and mineralogist Jack Hodgins (T.J. Thyne), pathologist Camille Saroyan (Tamara Taylor), psychologist Lance Sweets (John Francis Daley), and early lab intern Zack Addy (Eric Millegan) under director Dr Daniel Goodman (Jonathan Adams).
The show blends forensic procedure with dark humour and a slow-burning relationship between its two leads. Brennan’s literal-minded rationalism and Booth’s faith and intuition give the writers a steady source of comedy and drama. Creator Hart Hanson has said that Boreanaz was the first actor cast and that the chemistry between him and Deschanel was immediate at her audition. Both leads later moved behind the camera, directing episodes and becoming producers.
Bones is grislier and more science-driven than most cosy crime, but its ensemble warmth, recurring characters, running gags and case-of-the-week structure give it much of the genre’s rewatchable comfort. It also has a notable guest roster, including Stephen Fry as recurring psychologist Gordon Wyatt, Cyndi Lauper as Avalon Harmonia and ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons as Angela’s father.
