Bergerac (2025)

Premiering in February 2025 on U&Drama, this reimagined Bergerac brings the beloved Jersey detective into the modern era while honoring the spirit of the original 1981-1991 series. Created by Toby Whithouse (Being Human, Doctor Who), the six-episode first series takes a different approach from its predecessor, focusing on a single complex case rather than the original’s case-of-the-week format. Filmed on location in Jersey and Plymouth, the production showcases the island’s stunning scenery while exploring contemporary themes of wealth, power, and justice.

The new series finds Jim Bergerac in a darker place than his 1980s counterpart. Like the original character, he struggles with alcoholism, but this version is also mourning the recent loss of his wife and attempting to rebuild his relationship with his teenage daughter Kim, who has moved out to live with her grandmother. When Chief of Police Uma Dalal calls Bergerac back from bereavement leave to investigate a high-profile murder, she wants their best detective on the case—but questions remain about whether Bergerac can balance the demands of the investigation with his responsibilities as a father and his ongoing battle with addiction.

The central mystery revolves around the murder of a young woman and the abduction of her infant daughter from the powerful Wakefield family, one of Jersey’s wealthiest dynasties. Led by patriarch and businessman Arthur Wakefield, the family proves reluctant to cooperate, keeping their secrets close while Bergerac attempts to navigate the complex web of privilege and power. Complicating matters further, a figure from Bergerac’s past resurfaces to make a shocking accusation, adding personal stakes to an already challenging investigation.

The production pays homage to the original series in several ways, most notably through the return of the iconic burgundy 1947 Triumph Roadster, which Bergerac drives (and occasionally sleeps in). Damien Molony, who takes over the role from John Nettles, received the original actor’s blessing, with Nettles telling him: “Bergerac has been so good to my career, I hope it’s as good to yours.” The series also features a gender-flipped version of Charlie Hungerford, now played by Zoë Wanamaker as Bergerac’s mother-in-law rather than father-in-law, maintaining the complex family dynamics that were central to the original.

Directed by Colm McCarthy (Peaky Blinders, The Bastard Son & the Devil Himself), the new Bergerac brings contemporary production values while remaining true to the essence of what made the original beloved: the stunning Jersey locations, a flawed but compelling detective, and the unique blend of personal drama with crime investigation
