Hamish Macbeth
About This Show
Hamish Macbeth is less interested in enforcing the letter of the law than keeping the peace in Lochdubh (Gaelic for “black lake”), a tight-knit fictional community on Scotland’s west coast where everyone knows everyone—including their respective pets. As the village’s only police constable with the Northern Constabulary, Hamish has carved out an idyllic existence for himself: investigating local mysteries, fishing, drinking coffee, and maintaining harmony in his beloved community without great reliance on strict legal procedure.
His greatest fear isn’t criminals—it’s being promoted or transferred away from Lochdubh. To avoid this fate, Hamish frequently lets others take credit for his successful police work and sometimes seems more intent on keeping local petty criminals away from prison and harsh penalties than on pursuing convictions. He strongly dislikes involvement from the Inverness police and their by-the-book approach, preferring his own uniquely compassionate style of law enforcement.
Set against the stunning coastal scenery of the Scottish Highlands (filmed on location in the picturesque village of Plockton and Kyle of Lochalsh), the series introduces viewers to an array of wonderfully eccentric villagers: TV John, Hamish’s clairvoyant friend and civilian assistant who got his nickname for being the first person in Lochdubh to own a television; the scheming father-and-son duo of the Lachie MacCraes; publican Barney Meldrum and his wife Agnes; schoolteacher Esme Murray and her not-so-secret romance with shopkeeper Rory Campbell; and Major Peregrine Maclean, the penniless aristocratic widower.
The series weaves mystical Scottish elements throughout its mysteries—TV John possesses “second sight” and experiences premonitions that protect both Hamish and the village, while Hamish himself occasionally encounters ghosts. These supernatural touches add distinctive Highland flavor to the show’s blend of mystery, comedy, and drama.
The major running theme is Hamish’s romantic entanglement with two very different women: Isobel Sutherland, a reporter on The Lochdubh Listener who loves him unrequitedly for much of the series, and Alexandra “Alex” Maclean, the Major’s daughter and a novelist with whom Hamish has an on-again, off-again relationship. Hamish’s difficulty in choosing between them provides ongoing dramatic tension until he finally realizes where his true feelings lie.
Loosely based on M.C. Beaton’s popular mystery novels (though author Marion Chesney openly expressed disappointment with the significant changes made to her creation), the BBC Scotland series ran for three seasons from 1995-1997, starring Robert Carlyle in a pre-Trainspotting performance that showcases his versatility. Accompanied by Gaelic music composed by John Lunn, the series offers a charming, often humorous take on Highland life where maintaining community harmony matters more than strict adherence to police procedure.
