Kenneth Branagh stars as Kurt Wallander, a weary, diabetic and increasingly disillusioned police inspector in the small town of Ystad in southern Sweden. His investigations into brutal crimes in the apparently sleepy backwaters of Skåne take a growing toll on his family, his relationships and his sanity. The series is a brooding, visually striking adaptation of Henning Mankell’s best-selling crime novels.
Wallander is a British crime drama adapted from Henning Mankell’s Inspector Wallander novels. It ran on BBC One across four series and twelve feature-length episodes of around 90 minutes, from November 2008 to May 2016. It was filmed on location in Ystad and the surrounding Skåne region of southern Sweden, and produced by Left Bank Pictures and Yellow Bird for BBC Scotland, with ARD Degeto. Kenneth Branagh, who has said he first met Mankell at an Ingmar Bergman film festival in 2007 and asked to play the role, stars as Wallander and also serves as an executive producer. His performance won him an International Emmy.
Branagh’s Wallander is an “everyman” of the old school, a gentle, dishevelled man whose work exposes him to violence that increasingly overwhelms him. The cases include the slaying of an elderly couple at an isolated farmhouse, a serial killer, a missing woman on a conference trip to South Africa and corruption reaching the heart of the Swedish establishment. Around him is the Ystad team: Richard McCabe as the forensic officer Nyberg, Sarah Smart as Anne-Britt Höglund, Sadie Shimmin as Chief Lisa Holgersson, Tom Hiddleston as the young detective Magnus Martinsson and Tom Beard as Svedberg. Jeany Spark plays his daughter Linda, and David Warner his father Povel.
The BBC adaptations were praised for their cinematography, pacing and sense of place, and they won BAFTA Television Craft Awards for production design and sound. The writers include Richard Cottan, Richard McBrien and Peter Harness, with Philip Martin, Niall MacCormick and Benjamin Caron directing. The final series is based on Mankell’s last novel, The Troubled Man, and follows Wallander as he comes to terms with his past while working a deeply personal case, in Skåne, Copenhagen and Cape Town.
