The Northumbria Mysteries

The Northumbria Mysteries is a BBC crime drama of eight 45-minute episodes, made by Newcastle-based Lonesome Pine Productions for BBC One and iPlayer. It premieres on Friday 23 October 2026 at 2pm, with the first four episodes available on iPlayer the same day. Commissioned by Helen Munson, the BBC’s commissioning editor for Daytime and Early Peak, it marks a significant return of BBC scripted production to the North East and is supported by North East Screen’s North East Production Fund. It’s set and filmed in Northumberland, and Robson Green has said the county’s landmarks mean it “functions as a principal character” in the drama.

Robson Green, best known as DI Geordie Keating in Grantchester, takes the lead as Joe Ruby, “a jack-of-all-trades whose life has been shaped by mistakes, regrets and missed opportunities”, described elsewhere as a former convict and gambler. This time he is not the detective. His partner is DI Rose O’Connell, played by Liz White (Life on Mars, Call the Midwife, Unforgotten). The official description is a “classic odd-couple pairing” in which Joe and Rose “combine their talents as they frustrate, confound and ultimately surprise one another”. The supporting cast announced so far includes Simon Callow, Kevin Whately, Gurjeet Singh and Chris Gascoyne, though their roles haven’t been published.

Directed by Gordon Anderson and Duncan Foster and produced by Lesley Douglas, it follows the template of daytime BBC cosy crime such as Father Brown and The Coroner, with an unlikely duo and an unmistakable sense of place. It also arrives as Grantchester draws to a close, and it is being pitched at the audience that show built.
