Murder, She Wrote follows Jessica Fletcher, a retired English teacher from the small coastal town of Cabot Cove, Maine, who becomes a bestselling mystery novelist after being widowed. Wherever she goes, whether home, New York City or abroad on book tours and family visits, murder follows. With an author’s eye for plot and motive, she keeps outwitting the professionals, to the weary resignation of Cabot Cove’s sheriffs.
Murder, She Wrote is an American mystery series created by Peter S. Fischer, Richard Levinson and William Link for CBS, produced by Universal Television. It premiered on 30 September 1984 and ran for twelve seasons and 264 episodes until 19 May 1996. It was followed by four TV movies and a spin-off, The Law & Harry McGraw. Angela Lansbury stars as Jessica Fletcher and is the only actress to appear in every episode and TV film. The role earned her twelve consecutive Emmy nominations, and she became an executive producer from 1992.
Jessica is a down-to-earth, middle-aged widow who never lets success go to her head. She stays rooted in Cabot Cove and its friends, rides a bicycle around town (it’s established early that she can’t drive), and approaches every case with patience, curiosity and good manners. The show’s central joke is the “Cabot Cove syndrome”: a quiet coastal town with an absurd murder rate. Sheriff Mort Metzger (Ron Masak) calls it the “death capital of Maine”. The format is classic fair-play whodunit. Each episode brings a murder, a cast of colourful suspects (often famous guest stars) and a final reveal where Jessica explains how she worked it out.
The recurring Cabot Cove ensemble gives the show its warmth. Tom Bosley plays Sheriff Amos Tupper in the early seasons, William Windom is Dr Seth Hazlitt, her closest friend, and Ron Masak takes over as Sheriff Metzger from Season 5. Michael Horton plays her nephew Grady, and Louis Herthum plays deputy Andy Broom. Other regulars include Jerry Orbach as private investigator Harry McGraw, Keith Michell as Dennis Stanton and Julie Adams as Eve Simpson. Many episodes leave Cabot Cove for New York, Hollywood and locations around the world.
The series is a cornerstone of American cosy crime: no graphic violence, an older woman as the clever lead, and a reassuring sense that justice will be done by the closing credits. Its influence runs through later amateur-sleuth shows, and its premise, a writer who solves real crimes, echoes in recent titles like You’re Killing Me and Only Murders in the Building.
